Turning a Cut List into Buyable Stock

Linear optimization answers a shop question: given the lengths you can actually buy (or already have on the rack), how do you nest parts so you waste less and still leave room for the saw kerf and square ends? This tool uses a first-fit style packing pass—parts are placed onto stock in order, so sorting your longest pieces first usually yields a tighter map than leaving shorts at the top of the list.

How to use this optimizer

  1. Set blade kerf and how much you will trim off each rough end to square the stock.
  2. Enter available stock lengths (inches), then add every part length and quantity from your cut list.
  3. Run the layout. Review the colored cut map, leftover waste, and the shopping list of boards to purchase.

Kerf, trim, and shopping tips

Every crosscut removes kerf width from usable length; ignore it and the last part on a board will come up short. End trim is not optional on rough lumber—budget it on both ends if you mill from random stock. When the shopping list shows many short leftovers, try adding a longer stock length (e.g. 10' instead of 8') or splitting a long part across a glue-up rather than forcing it onto an undersized stick. Always keep grain direction and defects in mind; the algorithm packs length only, not figure matching.

FAQ

Is first-fit the absolute minimum waste?

Not always. It is fast and shop-practical. Reordering parts (longest first) or trying alternate stock lengths often beats chasing a perfect mathematical packing.

Does trim apply once per board or per cut?

Trim is end-squaring allowance on the stock, not an extra kerf between parts. Kerf is applied between successive cuts on that board.

Can I use this for sheet goods?

No—this is a 1D (linear) optimizer. Use the sheet cut planner for plywood and panel layouts in two dimensions.

Should I buy the exact shopping-list count?

Add a board or two for defects, grain rejects, and mistakes—especially on clear or matched stock. The list is a minimum, not a guarantee.
