Plate Weight Takeoff Practice

Flat plate often dominates miscellaneous steel tonnage — base plates, gussets, stiffeners, and shear tabs. Weight is simply volume × density: thickness × width × length × 0.2833 lb/in³ for carbon steel (490 lb/ft³), the same constant AISC manuals and Tekla/SDS2 use for estimating.

Estimating tips for fabricators

Use finished (cut) sizes for shipping weight; add nest scrap separately when ordering mill plate. Stainless at ~0.29 lb/in³ runs heavier than carbon of the same size — a common surprise on architectural packages. For circular or irregular blanks, convert to an equivalent rectangle or use πr² × t × density offline, then add the line manually with matching weight intent.

FAQ

Should I enter nominal or actual thickness?

Use the thickness you will cut and ship. Mill plate tolerance can vary; for paid weight disputes, match the mill cert or scale ticket method your contract uses.

Does this include weld metal or paint?

No — plate body only. Add weld deposit and coatings with separate takeoff tools if they matter for freight.

Why 0.2833 instead of 0.283?

0.2833 lb/in³ is the conventional structural estimating density aligned with 490 lb/ft³. Small rounding differences rarely matter below several tons.

Can I mix materials on one list?
