Why Gauge Depends on Material
Gauge is not a universal thickness. Carbon sheet uses Manufacturers’ Standard Gauge (MSG), stainless uses U.S. Standard Gauge, and aluminum uses Brown & Sharpe — so the same “10 ga” callout can be 0.1345″, 0.1406″, or 0.1019″. Calling only “10 ga deck” without material is how shops cut the wrong coil.

Galvanized and coating notes
Galvanized gauge listings usually include zinc. The steel core is slightly thinner than the nominal decimal, which matters for corrosion allowance and weld burn-through more than for rough psf estimating. Prefer specifying decimal thickness (or mils) on critical architectural stainless and aluminum panels to avoid gauge-table arguments.
FAQ
Is 10 ga always 1/8″?
No. Carbon 10 ga MSG is 0.1345″, not 0.125″. If you need 1/8″ plate, call 0.125″ or 11 ga with care — do not assume.
Are these minimum or nominal thicknesses?
Nominal industry chart values. Mill coil can run under/over; check ASTM tolerances and vendor certs for structural or code-controlled thicknesses.
Can I use psf for painted panels?
The psf here is bare metal. Add coating and insulation weights separately for roof/wall assemblies.
What about deck and joist gauges?
Metal deck often uses design thickness in inches on load tables. Cross-check the deck catalog; do not substitute sheet-gauge charts blindly for composite deck.
