AISC Minimum Edge Distances
Edge distance is measured from the center of the hole to the nearest edge of the connected part. AISC Table J3.4 sets minima that depend on bolt diameter and whether the edge is sheared or rolled/thermally cut. Violating these values is a common detailing RFI on cropped clip angles and short-legged gussets.
How to use this calculator
- Select bolt diameter matching the connection schedule.
- Choose Sheared for crop/punch edges, or Rolled/Cut for saw, plasma, laser, or mill flange toes.
- Check Oversized when holes are OVS (or similar) so the J3.5 increment is added to the table value.
Sheared edges and oversized holes
Sheared edges need more edge distance because cold shearing can introduce micro-cracks. Rolled beam flanges and clean thermal cuts may use the smaller column. Standard-hole values come from J3.4; oversized holes add roughly 1/8″ (through 7/8″ bolts) or 1/4″ (1″ and larger) per J3.5 so net material beside the hole remains adequate. Preferences on the drawing that exceed the minimum are still fine — these are floors, not targets.
FAQ
Is this center-of-hole or edge-of-hole?
Center of hole to the free edge, matching AISC. Do not dimension from the hole wall unless your shop standard converts explicitly.
Do slotted holes use the same table?
Longitudinal and transverse slots have additional spacing and edge rules. Use the Specification and RCSC for slots; this tool covers standard and oversized round holes.
What about bearing strength vs minimum edge?
J3.4 minima are geometric limits. Connection strength may still require larger edge or end distances for bearing and tear-out — check J3.10 when loads are high.
Are galvanized plates different?
Coating does not change the tabulated edge distance. Watch hole size after galvanizing if you specified tight clearances for fit-up.
