Span, Thickness, and Visible Sag
Shelves fail aesthetically long before they fail structurally. A gentle curve that is safe can still look cheap once it crosses roughly 0.02″ of sag per foot of span—the rule of thumb this tool flags. Deflection grows with the cube of span and shrinks with the cube of thickness, which is why a 36″ span in ¾″ material behaves so differently from the same board at 24″ or bumped up to 1″ thick.

Load assumptions and wood vs plywood
Uniform load models weight spread along the span; a single amp or aquarium is closer to center load and will sag more for the same total pounds. Solid hardwoods generally out-stiff softwoods of the same thickness; plywood stiffness depends on veneer species and layup—cabinet birch often beats low-grade softwood ply, while MDF is heavy and sags readily on long spans. Fixed ends, thick edge banding, or a cleat under the front edge all improve real-world performance beyond a simple simply-supported model—treat the number as a planning guide, not a stamped engineering calc.

What load should I enter for a bookcase?
Estimate pounds of books on that shelf (hardcovers are heavy). When unsure, overestimate—sag formulas punish optimism.
Will a hardwood nosing fix a plywood shelf?
A stout front rail or torsion-box edge helps a lot. A thin iron-on edge band mostly hides plywood layers; it does little for stiffness.
Is “acceptable” the same as code-safe?
No. Acceptable here means likely below the visual sag threshold. Structural shelves for heavy storage need proper design and fastening.
How do I reduce sag without shortening the span?
Increase thickness, switch to a stiffer species or plywood, add a mid-span support, or build a torsion-box / laminated shelf.
